GRAD STUDENTS
[in order of seniority, starting with least senior]
Steve Piantadosi
Steve is interested in using methods from information theory, machine
learning, and Bayesian modeling to understand language processing and
acquisition. He is currently working on information-theoretic methods to
quantify the usefulness and interaction of information sources in
disambiguation, and a Bayesian model of the acquisition of compositional
semantics.

Mike Frank
Mike is interested in the mechanisms of language acquisition: the tools that infants and young children bring to bear on the problems of word segmentation, word learning, and grammar learning. In order to learn to communicate, learners must combine distributional information about the language they hear with other information about the physical and social world around them. Mike looks at this puzzle using a variety of methods, including behavioral experiments with adults, children, and infants, and computational models of corpus data.

John Kraemer
John is interested in how top-down semantic intentions interact with bottom-up structural constraints to determine the surface forms of linguistic expression. He is currently investigating how this class of phenomenon is expressed in readers' use of statistical information in sentence comprehension, as well as in the structural patterns governing discourse production.
Ev Fedorenko
Ev is interested in the question of the extent of domain-specificity in the mind and brain with regard to language and other cognitive systems. She is currently pursuing a postdoc in Nancy Kanwisher's lab investigating the functional architecture and the extent of domain-specificity of the language system using fMRI. She is also continuing to pursue a number of projects aimed at understanding the memory systems underlying language processing at TedLab.
